This course provides an evidence-based overview of pediatric anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. 

Topics include the epidemiology and risk factors associated with pediatric ACL injury, treatment considerations, rehabilitation planning, and return-to-sport decision-making. At the conclusion of this course, learners will be equipped to support young athletes across the continuum of care, applying evidence-based strategies to guide recovery, inform return-to-sport decisions, and promote long-term athletic participation and performance.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the epidemiology and impact of pediatric ACL injuries.
  2. Explain treatment and surgical decision-making considerations in skeletally immature athletes.
  3. Identify modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors associated with ACL injury.
  4. Implement evidence-based rehabilitation interventions throughout the continuum of care.
  5. Apply a multifactorial return-to-sport framework.
  6. Develop strategies to progress athletes from return to sport to return to performance while reducing reinjury risk.

Lauren Butler, PT, DPT, SCS, is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Florida International University and a board-certified clinical specialist in sports physical therapy with over 16 years of experience in pediatric sports physical therapy at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. She is a board member of the Pediatric Research in Sports Medicine (PRiSM) Society and serves on the steering committee for the ACL Reconstruction Rehabilitation Outcomes Workgroup (ARROW), contributing to multicenter research that advances evidence-based care for young athletes. Her research focuses on pediatric sports medicine, including injury prevention, validation of clinical screening tools, rehabilitation, and return-to-sport decision-making, with more than 25 peer-reviewed publications.
