Marissa Muccio

PT, PSSE-Schroth Instructor

Marissa Muccio is a physical therapist specializing in scoliosis rehabilitation. A 1998 graduate of Rutgers University, she has dedicated her career to advancing clinical practice and education in physical therapy.

Since 2000, Muccio has owned and operated a private practice that serves as a clinical education site for Rutgers University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program. Her practice encompasses a wide range of pediatric settings, including NICU, neuromuscular, craniofacial, pediatric oncology, inpatient, outpatient, aquatics, early intervention programs, and NDT-certified pediatric care.

In 2009, Muccio became one of the first U.S.-based clinicians to achieve certification in the Schroth Method, a specialized approach to scoliosis-specific exercises (PSSE). She now co-owns one of the leading Scoliosis Specialty Centers in the United States, with locations in New Jersey, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Her center is recognized for its comprehensive, non-operative scoliosis rehabilitation programs.

Muccio is a sought-after national and international lecturer and educator in the field of PSSE. She serves as a certified instructor for the international PSSE-Schroth Method, educating physical therapists worldwide in evidence-based scoliosis rehabilitation techniques. Her commitment to advancing the field is further demonstrated through her collaborative research efforts, including co-authoring the 2023 perspective article "Bridging Motor Learning Principles with Physiotherapy Specific Scoliosis Exercises," published in Physical & Occupational Therapy in Pediatrics.

Muccio's professional affiliations include the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS), and the International Society on Scoliosis Orthopaedic and

Rehabilitation Treatment (SOSORT). She has served on several committees within the SRS, including the Patient Education Committee (2019–2022), Professional Education Committee (2022–2024), and Comprehensive Care Committee (2024–present). Additionally, she is a member of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Grant Advisory Board for Scoliosis Specific Exercise Rehabilitation.

Recognized for her excellence in clinical practice and teaching, Muccio received the 2016 Rutgers SHRP DPT Alumni of the Year award and the 2018 James Tucker Excellence in Clinical Practice and Teaching Award. She is also a medical advisor and expert for several non-profit organizations focused on patients with scoliosis.
